In a recent episode of the Altitude podcast, host Woody Woodworth and Tchimwa Sougang, Principal Solutions Architect at Aviatrix, delve into the challenges of troubleshooting complex cloud networks. Tchimwa, who specializes in cloud networking architecture, shares his expertise on navigating challenges within the cloud, exploring the strategic approaches that can simplify troubleshooting. By understanding these insights, IT teams can make the most of their cloud investment.

The Common Pitfalls of Cloud Networking

Understanding Misconfigurations and Incorrect Implementations

One of the most frequent issues network engineers encounter in cloud environments is misconfigurations. According to Tchimwa, cloud networks are prone to misconfigurations due to the absence of a standardized approach to implementation across cloud service providers (CSPs). “You end up with cloud-specific challenges because there’s no one-size-fits-all solution,” he notes.

These misconfigurations often arise because each CSP has its unique tools, settings, and terminology. Engineers accustomed to on-premises environments may inadvertently implement incorrect configurations when transitioning to the cloud. For example, a network architecture that works seamlessly in AWS may require significant adjustments in Azure. Without proper visibility and understanding of each CSP’s nuances, even experienced engineers can struggle to identify and resolve issues promptly.

The Emotional Challenges of Cloud Transition

The transition from traditional on-premises networking to cloud services also brings emotional challenges for network engineers. Moving to the cloud can be daunting and frustrating as you lack visibility and control. “You can’t just touch a switch or a router like you used to,” Tchimwa points out. This shift can lead to errors, misconfigurations, and delays in troubleshooting.

Key Strategies for Effective Troubleshooting

Importance of Cloud-Specific Training

Specialized training is crucial for effective troubleshooting in cloud environments. Tchimwa emphasizes that cloud networking is fundamentally different from traditional networking and requires a unique skill set. “The Aviatrix Certified Engineer (ACE) Program was pivotal in helping me bridge that knowledge gap,” he says.

The ACE Program offers comprehensive training across AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI, enabling professionals to build, operate, automate, scale, and secure cloud networks across any cloud. Tchimwa shares success stories of engineers who have significantly improved their troubleshooting capabilities after completing the ACE Program.

Embrace Cloud-optimized Strategies

Letting go of outdated practices is another essential strategy for effective troubleshooting in the cloud. “You can’t rely on the same methodologies that worked in traditional networking,” Tchimwa advises.

In the cloud, engineers need to embrace new, cloud-optimized practices. For instance, instead of focusing solely on individual virtual machines or subnets, engineers should adopt a holistic approach to network architecture, considering cloud native services and security policies. By understanding the intricacies of cloud services, engineers can optimize network efficiency and security.

Bridging the Gap Between DevOps and Networking Teams

Collaboration between DevOps and networking teams is vital for successful troubleshooting. Tchimwa notes that these teams often operate in silos, leading to miscommunication and inefficiencies. “There’s a gap that needs to be bridged between DevOps and networking,” he emphasizes.

To enhance problem-solving and operational efficiency, Tchimwa recommends fostering a culture of collaboration. Networking teams should work closely with DevOps to understand application requirements and deployment strategies. Conversely, DevOps teams must consider network architecture and security implications when building applications. By aligning their objectives, both teams can streamline troubleshooting and improve cloud network performance.

Insights from Real-World Experiences

Tchimwa shares several success stories from customers who have effectively managed their cloud networks by adopting new strategies and training. One such customer, a global e-commerce company, faced significant delays in identifying network issues due to a lack of visibility. After implementing a cloud visibility solution and undergoing ACE Program training, their network engineers reduced troubleshooting times by over 50%.

Another customer, a multinational financial institution, struggled with cloud misconfigurations that led to frequent downtime. By standardizing network architectures across CSPs and fostering collaboration between DevOps and networking teams, the institution improved its cloud network uptime and reduced operational costs.

These real-world experiences underscore the importance of specialized training, collaboration, and adopting new practices in overcoming cloud networking challenges.
